who is who?

WHERE ARE THEY FROM? HOW OLD ARE THEY? WHAT DO THEY LIKE? WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?

THEY DANCE ALONE by STING

This song is called They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo). It was written and sung by Sting.

The song is about people who disappeared during the dictatorship in Chile. Many men and women were taken by the government, and their families never knew what happened to them.

The song focuses on the women who were left behind: mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters. In Chile, the cueca is a traditional dance that people usually dance in pairs. These women danced the cueca alone in the streets to protest and to remember the missing people.

The song talks about memory, injustice, and the fight for human rights.

DESAPARICIONES by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs

Before we listen to the song, let’s learn a little about it. “Desapariciones” is a song by Rubén Blades, a singer from Panama. He wrote it in the 1980s.

At that time, some countries in Latin America had military governments. During those years, many people were taken by the authorities and never seen again. Their families did not know where they were or what happened to them.

In the song, different people are looking for someone they love: a son, a husband, or a friend. They ask questions and try to find answers.
